Japanese Art Pottery - High Fired Stoneware with Wood-Ash Glazes. STUNNING HAND CRAFTED SET of 4 ASH GLAZED FOOTED ART POTTERY LOW BOWLS or DISHES. DEEP DRAMATIC BLACK with TOUCHES of DEEPEST COPPERY BROWN and SHIMMERING SILVER FIREWORKS with SUBTLE LUMINESCENCE. Each piece is almost 5" across and 1.25" high.I have received private emails from many people I trust who are positive that the Mashiko pieces I offer are by Shoji Hamada. A wonderful customer of mine told me her father worked alongside Hamada and Leach in Hamada's compound in Mashiko during the 1960s when my pieces were created, and she recognizes them since she grew up with and inherited so many similar pieces from her Dad. Another customer, who spent time in Mashiko during the 196Os also tells me these items are definitely Hamada made vessels. At least 2 pottery experts/collectors have also confirmed that these pieces are Hamada's. They had a huge building with so many wonderful things.
These pottery pieces I found and bought were the gallery's most valuable pieces, which they told me many times. Hamada did not sign his work. He did not believe in signing his pottery.

This vessel set is New Old Stock - it was in storage for almost half a century - recently discovered - never touched nor used - rare and unique.Have you heard the term New Old Stock (NOS)? For example, if you were lucky enough to come across a collection of baseball cards (hopefully still in the old wrappers and un-opened), that could be NOS. Other New Old stock items are art glass, pottery, pens, watches, toys, or other things - you may have received as a child - but never used or opened. The real trick is to be lucky enough to find New Old Stock. In the marketplace, NOS is like the "holy grail" of anything collectible, and is so highly prized that it often commands high prices.
